In a shocking incident on February 25, 2024, Tracy “Suo” Chappelle, a sportscaster and broadcast journalist at Wazobia FM Lagos, was physically assaulted by Wisdom Moses and his family along the Lekki-Epe Expressway. The National Guild of Radio Managers (Private) strongly condemns the heinous attack and demands swift justice for the victim.
The Guild, representing General Managers, Station Heads/Managers, and MDs of private radio broadcast stations in Nigeria, expressed deep dismay and consternation over the unprovoked assault on Chappelle. The incident left her severely battered physically, psychologically, and emotionally.
In a released statement, Dr. Sarfmy Adrian Ajufo JP, Secretary General of the Guild, categorically condemned the assault on Tracy Chappelle, emphasizing her status as both a professional within the broadcasting industry and an employee in the private sector. The Guild vows to protect the rights, safety, and welfare of its members while condemning such attacks on individuals, particularly on women.
The Guild calls upon the Nigerian security agencies, specifically the Nigeria Police and the Judiciary, not to treat this matter lightly. It insists on a thorough investigation and urges for the perpetrators to be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. The collusion of a “heavily pregnant” wife in the attack is deemed particularly disheartening, highlighting the urgent need for justice and deterrence against such acts.
Commending the prompt actions of the security agencies and the judiciary in apprehending the culprits, the Guild urges sister associations, including the NUJ, SWAN, SBAN, and NBC, to join in advocating for justice. The National President, Amb. Patrick Uzoyi-Peters JP, has directed key officials to follow up on the matter, ensuring Tracy’s representation and support during this challenging time.
The Guild declares its commitment to seeing the case through to its logical conclusion, standing united with its members and lending support to any practitioner facing similar circumstances. As the Guild declares, “An injury to one is an injury to all,” expressing solidarity with Tracy “Suo” Chappelle and her family as they recover from this reprehensible encounter.
