WHAT YOUR PROFILE PICTURE SAYS ABOUT YOU

By Ifeoluwa Iretimidayo

Do you know that your profile picture speaks a lot about you?

“A Picture” according to the dictionary is an image or representation of anything in form of painting, drawing, photography, etc. A picture most times carries so many messages that may be interpreted literally (directly) or figuratively (indirectly). A picture, they say, is worth a thousand words.

A profile picture is an image that represents a social media account. Every social media platform, has its own way of bringing out the quality of our pictures. And, this is why people prefer to take pictures using either a professional camera or phones with high camera resolutions.

The buzz of posing “beautifully’ or “handsomely” on every media platform cannot be over-emphasized.
Many people are not aware of the fact that their profile pictures can either make them gain life changing opportunities or lose them. At the moment, we are in an age where people tend to use social media to check out the lifestyle of others.

In this modern age, where we have rapid growth and development in technology, recruiters take to social media platforms to check your profile picture and other pictures you have uploaded online which would help them have an idea of the kind of person you are. How you pose, your smile, what you’re wearing, the background of your picture, and possibly the location where you took the picture would always be put into consideration. Trust me, no one would like to employ a person whose appearance on social media is perceived as “irresponsible”.

Also, profile pictures can be used as a form of yardstick in your choice of friends, audiences and acquaintances on social media platforms. Many times, you are surrounded by the choices you’ve made on social media via your profile pictures, although, many think otherwise, and have no regards for it.

Obviously, many of our social media platforms include job columns particularly, LinkedIn which was specially designed as a professional networking site for business connects, and, this is the more reason you need to value what you display as your profile picture. Facebook and Instagram, unlike LinkedIn can give someone an insight into your unique style through your other uploaded pictures.

LinkedIn has also added a Stories feature where you can showcase your professionalism, not forgetting to include a decent and morally justifiable standard of dressing. Social media has gone beyond the level of ‘unseriousness’ , it is now a clarion call for serious individuals, especially business minded people.

Your profile picture gives an impression of who you are, therefore, you have to be mindful of how you take your pictures, who you take your pictures with, and, where you take your pictures. Your profile picture represents your personality.
