Dr. Femi Adefila, Chairman of Rave FM and Television Oshogbo, Osun State, has called on the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to break Multi-Choice’s monopoly as the sole cable service provider in Nigeria. Adefila made this call during his welcome speech at the official commissioning of Dominion Ultramodern Broadcast Complex in Ibadan.
He emphasized the new broadcast station’s desire to be available on both terrestrial and cable networks but noted the difficulties they face due to Multi-Choice’s dominance in the market. Adefila believes that having different alternatives competing against each other would make the process easier.
He urged the NBC to urgently investigate breaking the monopoly enjoyed by Multi-Choice, owners of DStv and GOtv. This call is not new, as there have been previous appeals to break Multi-Choice’s monopoly. The Association of Telephone, Cable TV and Internet Subscribers of Nigeria (ATCIS) has also asked the Federal Government to intervene.
Similarly, the House of Representatives has moved to address the “arbitrary” subscription rates charged by Multi-Choice. The commissioning of the Dominion Ultramodern Broadcast Complex was well attended by media stakeholders, traditional rulers, and politicians, including Ambassador Yemi Farounbi, Uncle Yanju Adegbite, Elder Wole Oyelese, and His Royal Highness, Oba Adedokun Abolarin, the Orangun of Oke-ila in Osun State.
