Nigerian media personality, Toke Makinwa believes it is better to remain unmarried – even into one’s 50s – than to tie the knot with somebody who you would have to be enduring their “bullshit”.
The 37-year-old, who is also an actress, author, vlogger and entrepreneur, shared her thoughts in a series of tweets on Tuesday.
She said: “Nigerian men’s definition of a strong woman is long suffering, emotional abuse and a high tolerance of accepting bad behavior.
“You’ll hear them say ‘she turned the boy in me into a man’, that means her name is endurance, the woman has endured .
Toke continued: “Society encourages that sort of narrative, women are seen as strong by the amount of BS she’s has to endure till the man was ready to give her peace.
“When they meet the women who stand up for themselves? Society labels them as wayward and too opinionated. Who is Society again?”
The radio and television presenter added: “They automatically think being alone at a certain age means you are miserable .
“Would you not rather be 55 and alone than enduring BS with someone?
“If that’s the definition of miserable, a beg which one will you rather be?”
A Twitter user (@Arewa_QueenAmin) said: “The definition can also mean tolerance, good food and respect and there’s nothing wrong in expecting that from a woman. Don’t let western ideology deceive you.”
Toke responded: “As long as the tolerance is not one sided, every individual deserves respect and after all his expectations hope he meets hers too. ”
Another user however slammed Toke: “Go and leave Ur anyhow life. nobody cares about the nonsense u hav to say. Until u get to 55 years without a husband.your eye go open.”
“This is someone’s 9 month ,” Toke replied.
