The Oyo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called on media organizations to ensure timely payment of salaries and provide insurance coverage for their employees.
This appeal was made in a communiqué released after the union’s monthly congress held on Friday at the NUJ Secretariat in Iyaganku, Ibadan.
The document, compiled by Comrades Akeem Abas (Chairman), Olamide Adeniji (Secretary), and Dayo Adu (Member), was shared with the press by the union’s Secretary, Sola Oladapo.
The NUJ also noted the rapid increase in radio stations across the state and emphasized the need for media owners to prioritize the welfare of journalists by guaranteeing regular salaries and comprehensive insurance coverage.
“The congress observed a significant increase in the number of radio stations in Oyo State, particularly in Ibadan. While acknowledging this growth and the multimillion naira investments of these media owners towards creating jobs and new lease of lives for journalists, the union advised media owners to prioritize the payment of salaries and insurance coverage for our colleagues and other members of staff.
“The congress noted with concern that some media owners establish media outfits primarily to advance their political interests, often employing unqualified personnel at the expense of trained media professionals.
“While commending both the federal and state governments for their efforts in improving road infrastructure, the congress urged the Federal Ministry of Works ; Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and Oyo State Road Transport Management Authority (OYRTMA) to be more proactive in ensuring safety on our roads.
“The congress called on the Oyo State Government to adequately equip the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) for swift and effective responses to emergencies,” the communique read.
