Broadcasting Industry Urged to Embrace Unity and Solidarity

Comrade Oluwaseun Akeju, National President of the National Union of Pidgin Broadcasters, has issued a passionate call for unity and solidarity within the Nigerian broadcasting industry.  In a statement released this week, Akeju expressed concern over a growing trend of negativity and lack of support among broadcasters, which he believes is detrimental to the profession.

Akeju cited a recent incident where a newly established radio station, yet to begin broadcasting, faced criticism from within the industry.  He questioned the motives behind such negativity, emphasizing the vast potential of the broadcasting landscape and the possibility for all stations to thrive.  “The sky is indeed wide enough for 20 million birds to fly,” Akeju stated, “and there is room for everyone to thrive in the broadcasting industry.”

He stressed the role of broadcasters as role models, highlighting their responsibility to inspire, educate, and entertain.  However, he argued that internal conflict and criticism undermine their credibility and ability to effectively serve their audience.  “How can we do this effectively if we are busy fighting and criticizing each other?” he asked.

Akeju called on his colleagues to embrace peace and appreciate new beginnings, regardless of their perceived size or significance. He urged broadcasters to celebrate each other’s successes and offer support during challenging times, recognizing the interconnectedness of individual and industry-wide success.

“As I sit down to write this piece, I am filled with a mix of emotions – sadness, frustration, but also hope. As a seasoned broadcaster with over a decade of experience, I have witnessed the growth and evolution of our industry. However, I have also noticed a disturbing trend that threatens to undermine the very fabric of our profession. The lack of love, support, and solidarity among broadcasters is a cancer that must be addressed if we hope to thrive and make meaningful contributions to society.

“Recently, I was dismayed to hear that a new radio station, yet to commence transmission, was already being criticized and belittled by some individuals in the industry. This got me thinking – what is the gain of such negativity? Why do we delight in pulling each other down instead of lifting each other up? The sky is indeed wide enough for 20 million birds to fly, and there is room for everyone to thrive in the broadcasting industry.

“As broadcasters, we are role models. We have a responsibility to inspire, educate, and entertain our audience. But how can we do this effectively if we are busy fighting and criticizing each other? The lack of unity and solidarity in our industry is not only unprofessional, but it also undermines our credibility and integrity.

“I appeal to my colleagues in the broadcasting industry to let peace reign. Let us learn to appreciate every little beginning, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem. Let us celebrate each other’s successes and support each other through challenges. Let us recognize that we are all in this together, and that our individual successes are linked to the success of the industry as a whole.

“As the National President of the National Union of Pidgin Broadcasters, I am committed to promoting unity, solidarity, and professionalism in our industry. I urge all broadcasters to join me in this quest. Let us work together to build an industry that is characterized by love, support, and mutual respect.

“Together, we can achieve greatness. Together, we can make a positive impact on society. And together, we can build a broadcasting industry that is truly worthy of our noble profession.

“Comrade Oluwaseun Akeju
