As a Broadcasting Apostle that he is, he created the mantra of collaboration over competition in the media landscape at the inception of his own radio station due to his past experience with some radio stations and broadcast channels over the years, Yemi Sonde whose media career spans over three decades with high quality radio and television presentations and professional conducts.
He saw the need for media houses to develop special partnerships between radio stations in Nigeria and beyond. When he started his own radio station 101.7 Yes FM Ibadan he emphasized the importance of maintaining good relations between radio stations and he said “collaboration not competition”.
Yemi Sonde’s special interest to sanitize the broadcasting industry started when he went for his advanced media studies in the University for his Masters degree in Communications and Language Arts, then he saw the dire need for more enlightenment for his colleagues in the media industry.
He walked up to the the then NBC Zonal Director to start what will call NBC/Yemi Sonde Broadcast Media Stakeholders Forum which has been on for over 16 years free for all media professionals and media organizations to attend for saner media industry.
Yemi Sonde is just like a seer who sees the true picture of what the media industry needs to be and known for. He has been to many radio stations both privately owned and government owned for decades before founding his own radio station, Yes FM Ibadan which doesn’t stop his relationship with other media houses across the country. If i may tell you, Yemi Sonde still presents on Faaji FM Lagos once in a moth to authenticate the mantra “collaboration not competition”.
Recently, we have many broadcasters from another station doing one thing or the other with another radio station. This will really help the media industry grow and expand professionally as it is in other climes.
Collaboration not competition should be the hallmark for all media organizations and professionals who believe in the importance of moving with trends and diversification in the media landscape.
Kudos to Yemi Sonde for seeing the vision ahead and proclaiming it to bring all media professionals together without any bias and enmity as it was in some years back when broadcasters can’t sit on another broadcaster’s seat or eat together from the same table and many other scary things one could think of.
