Dr. Jika Attoh, a renowned broadcast trainer and manager, passed away on October 25, 2023, in Enugu, Nigeria, after a protracted illness. He was 67 years old.
Attoh was a pioneer media administrator and manager, and a legendary broadcast trainer who left indelible imprints on the hearts and minds of generations of practitioners. He specialized in Broadcast training and management, and was a famed news anchor at CHANNELS Television, Lagos, and former anchor of KAAKAKI, an award-winning Television interview programme. He was also a renowned Journalism trainer for the BBC World Service Trust (BBC MediaAction) in the EU-sponsored Nigerian Budget Monitoring Project and Consultant Media Trainer for ENABLE in Nigeria.
Attoh held several high-profile positions in his lifetime, including Board Member, Board of Directors, West Africa Democracy Radio, Dakar Senegal, and Executive Director, Lagoni Broadcast System. He is also credited with pioneering the first privately owned radio station in Enugu, Cosmo 105.5FM Enugu, paving the way and setting the tone for the broadcast industry as we know it today. He later replicated the same feat with Blaze 91.5FM Anambra, where he also served as CEO.
Attoh’s death has been met with shock and disbelief by friends, colleagues, mentees, and close associates. He is described as a respected legend, an industry icon, and an undoubted colossus who bestrode the broadcast landscape.
The National Guild of Radio Managers (Private) has expressed its condolences on the passing of Dr. Attoh, describing him as a “true broadcast legend.” The guild noted that Attoh’s contributions to the broadcast industry in Nigeria are immeasurable, and that he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
